Biking
Mountain Biking and Cycling in Stowe

Stowe is home to Cottonbrook, Vermont's first marked mountain-bike trail on state land. Other sanctioned mountain-bike trails are Old County Road, Stowe Hollow and Brownsville. There are trails on our campus as well as the cross-country skiing trails used during the winter right up the road.
Visitors who want to get the most out of an excursion can take advantage of guided mountain-bike tours offered by several area bike shops.

For those who want a gentler pace, a favorite bicycle ride is on Stowe's award-winning Recreation Path. The 5.3-mile paved trail starts just down the road from Foster’s Place and goes right into Stowe Village, winds its way through forests and meadows, and crosses the West Branch River 11 times on wooden bridges. Numerous shops, lodges, and restaurants are accessible from the path.

Cyclists can ride on 103 miles of road in Stowe--29 miles are blacktop and 74 miles are unpaved for relatively easy mountain biking. Rental bicycles are available from several shops on or near Recreation Path: Action Outfitters, A.J.'s Ski & Sports, Boots 'n Boards, the Mountain Sports & Bike Shop, and Pinnacle Ski & Sports.

Hiking

There is ample hiking in Stowe. There are trails on our campus as well as the many cross-country skiing trails used during the winter right up the road. These trails are less than moderate to moderate in steepness and are ideal for nature hikes. Trails are marked by signs, but a compass is always a good idea.

Hiking Vermont's Highest Mountain
The trail system on Mt. Mansfield is maintained by the Green Mountain Club. It is a network of trails that is well marked and provides some of the best hiking in North America. Trails leading up to the top of Mt. Mansfield climb almost 3000 vertical feet at a moderate incline. The Mt. Mansfield network is part of the Long Trail, which is a 265 mile trail system running from Canada to Massachusetts.

The views are well worth the effort: From the summit you can see west across Lake Champlain to the Adirondacks and Mt. Washington to the east. There are even overnight cabins for the hearty hiker who wishes to spend a night on the mountain.

Hiker's Tip: Allow yourself most of the day for hikes to and from the summit. Wear comfortable hiking shoes or sneakers. We recommend bringing a lunch and plenty of water on your hike.

For information on the Mt. Mansfield Hiking area, the hiking lodges, other trails on the Long Trail system and the Green Mountain Club, visit www.GreenMountainClub.org

Rollerblading

The 5 1/2 mile, paved recreation path that starts just down the road from Foster’s Place and winds it's way through hard wood forests, meadows, along the West Branch mountain stream, over 10 bridges, and leads to the historic village of Stowe, is excellent for rollerblading and enjoying the pristine mountain air.

Snowshoeing

We have trails right at Foster’s Place or you might try the Topnotch Cross-Country and Snowshoe center which is less than 1 mile from Foster’s Place, whose trails interconnect with 3 other major networks including the Trapp Family, Stowe Mountain and Edson Hill touring center networks.

The Stowe rec path is also an excellent trek.
